David Thomas MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, RNFA, has been a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) for 17 years and a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) for four years. David has 17 years of orthopedic experience and his vast orthopedic knowledge has allowed him to become an expert in caring for patients with a variety of orthopedic/sports-medicine related injuries and issues. David’s role as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and Family Nurse Practitioner is to Adhere to the Scope of Practice for Registered Nurse First Assistants (RNFA) and Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP-BC) as outlined by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

David earned his Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Nursing from Lincoln University (Jefferson City, MO) in 2004. He received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree also from Lincoln University in 2013. David earned the distinction of becoming a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) through the National Institutes of First Assisting in 2013. He then returned to school and earned is Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from Maryville University (St. Louis, MO) in 2016. David continues to grow his orthopedic knowledge through attending continuing medical education courses every year and he also serves as a Clinical Preceptor to students of differing medical disciplines.

David’s responsibilities as an orthopedic nurse practitioner in the clinic setting includes managing the care of patients (all ages) who suffer from a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including bone, joint and muscle problems. Furthermore, his role includes taking detailed patient histories, conducting physical exams, and ordering/interpreting tests and treatments, including diagnostic imaging. He collaborates closely with his clinical staff to coordinate patients’ care from the time of injury to discharge. David’s role in the operating room is executed through assisting Dr. Chris Main, DO, a Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, through varying orthopedic surgical procedures.

Patient populations include new patients, established patients with new injuries and complaints, as well as post-operative patients in their global period. David has spent his medical career assisting in the operating room, performing in-office procedures, cast/brace application, as well as many other skills needed to care for the general orthopedic population as well as pre-operative and post-operative orthopedic patients. He garners excellent communication and practice skills. David takes great pride in upholding the precision and expectations that the professional position as an Orthopedic Family Nurse Practitioner requires.  He is confident that he can bring his immense degree of orthopedic knowledge and add to the exceptional experiences expected of his patients.
